TAR Book stands for Training and Record book.
After completing your pre-sea training and obtaining the certificates, the tarbook will be needed when you join a company for onboard training.
It is basically for keeping a track record of your sailing activities. It is required for your on-board training, where the record of your work done is kept. When you begin your onboard training, you will perform certain tasks as per your designation and those tasks will be noted down in the TAR Book. After successful completion of these tasks, you will get the signature of your officer on the TAR Book.
It is used to assess your capabilities of completing certain tasks onboard and is also required in case you want to appear for higher examinations and move further in your career.
This tarbook is for those candidates who have completed their pre-sea training in G.P rating from a DG shipping approved institute. This book will keep a record of the activities that you undertake onboard such as Mooring operation, steering, watchkeeping, emergency tasks, etc.
This tarbook is for those candidates who have completed their pre-sea training in G.P rating from a DG shipping approved institute and want to pursue their career in the engine department. This book will keep a record of the activities that you undertake onboard such as assisting the officers in overall inspection and maintenance of equipment, grinding, buffing, etc.

This tarbook is for those candidates who have got their watchkeeping certificate from MMD and are looking forward to be a part of deck team. The book will keep a record of activities that you undertake onboard such as navigation, mooring, watchkeeping, deck maintenance, etc.
This tarbook is for those candidates who have got their watchkeeping certificate from MMD and are looking forward to be a part of engine team. The book will keep a record of activities that you undertake onboard such as filter cleaning, assisting officers in maintenance and inspections, watchkeeping, engine maintenance etc.
This tarbook is for those candidates who have completed their pre-sea training either in DNS or B.Sc. from a DG shipping approved institute. For candidates who have completed DNS, 3 books will be issued, and for candidates who have completed B.Sc, 1 book will be issued.
This book will keep a record of the activities that you undertake onboard such as navigation, maintenance and inspection of life-saving equipment and personal survival appliances, emergency communications, course plotting, watchkeeping, etc. You might also have to undertake a few basic tasks related to the Engine department, which will be recorded in the book too.
This tarbook is for those candidates who have completed their pre-sea training in B.Tech in Marine Engineering and GME (Graduate Marine Engineering) from a DG shipping approved institute. This book will keep a record of the activities that you undertake onboard such as tracing pipelines, overhauling inspection and maintenance of equipment, watchkeeping, familiarising with and keeping records of cargo related equipment, etc.
This TARBook is for candidates who have completed their pre-sea training in ETO from a DG Shipping approved institute. The book will keep a record of activities that you undertake onboard such as tasks related to routine starters, tube light fittings, insulation resistance of motors, changing bearings, watchkeeping, etc.

You can apply for your TARBook at the Board of Examinations of Seafarers Trust (BES). You need to submit all the required documents at their office and they will send your TARBook through courier.

Documents required:
Candidates who desire to collect ‘TAR/ Cadet record Book’ may send the requisition e-mail providing all the relevant details as per attached excel sheet through their Institute or Company to CMMI (The Company of Master Mariners of India).
You need to collect all the documents listed above and send them to your college/institute/company. They will then forward your application to CMMI.

Candidates who want to collect TARBook may fill the registration form on Institute of Marine Engineers (India) IMEI and do the payment.
FGV TARBook: Rs. 600/- (+Rs. 100/- Postage)
ETO TARBook: Rs. 300/- (+Rs. 100/- Postage)
