Course Overview:

B.Sc. in Nautical Science is a three-year undergraduate program, approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping(Government of India). After completing this degree course, the student can join a ship as a trainee cadet officer (commonly referred to as a deck cadet).

This course focuses on the fundamental, intellectual and practical device learning, that’s needed to navigate and operate ships securely. The cadet becomes eligible to take up the position of navigating officer onboard a merchant navy ship after having completed sufficient time at sea and clearing the required certificate of competency exams.

Eligibility Criteria:

Qualifications: 12th Pass with at least 60% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM), and 50% marks in English (in both 10th & 12th)

Age Limit: 17.5- 25 years (As on the date of commencement of course)

Medical standards: Candidates should be medically and physically fit. A full medical check-up through a Panel Doctor approved by D.G Shipping will be undertaken. A complete eyesight test will also be conducted in which the distance vision should be 6/6 with no colour blindness.

Selection Process

  • IMU-CET and Sponsorship: Eligible candidates have to appear for the IMU-CET exams. Rank-holding candidates must get sponsorship through any registered shipping company before registering for this course.
  • Panel interview: Shortlisted candidates get called for the admission procedure.
  • Medical examination: Selected candidates will undergo a medical screening to test their eyesight and physical fitness.
  • Pre-sea training: Candidates who clear the medical examination will begin with 3 years of pre-sea training.

Career Path

  • Pre-Sea Training
    Complete 3 years of your Pre-Sea training from a DG Shipping Approved institute and obtain a bachelor's degree.
  • Work as a Trainee
    Go through 12 months of onboard training as a trainee.
  • Promotion to 2nd Officer
    Join a ship as the 3rd Officer and get promoted to 2nd Officer after gaining relevant experience.
  • Promotion to Chief Officer
    After serving as the 2nd officer for a considerable period, get promoted to the Chief officer.
  • Become the Captain
    After serving as the Chief officer for a considerable period, get promoted to the Captain of the Ship.
