Course Overview:

Diploma in Nautical Science is an Indian Maritime University (IMU) affiliated pre-sea training program, certified by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS). The duration of this course is 1 year, and it takes place at a DGS-approved Maritime Academy. This 1-year course of pre-sea training is divided into two semesters, each of 6 months.

After completing both semesters, you have to do a Structured Shipboard Instruction Program (SSTP), which consists of 18 months of onboard training. Upon completion, you will receive a pre-sea completion certificate and are qualified to join a ship as a deck cadet. After completing the training, you have to appear for DGS exams, which will make you qualified to get the degree of B.Sc. in Nautical Science.

Eligibility Criteria:

Qualifications: 12th Pass with at least 60% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM), and 50% marks in English
OR
B.Sc. in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry with CGPA above 6.
OR
B.E./B. Tech. Degree from a college recognized by AICTE with CGPA above 6.

Age Limit: 17.5- 25 years (As on the date of commencement of course)

Medical standards: Candidates should be medically and physically fit. A full medical check-up through a Panel Doctor approved by D.G Shipping will be undertaken. A complete eyesight test will also be conducted in which the distance vision should be 6/6 with no colour blindness.

Selection Process

  • IMU-CET and Sponsorship: Eligible candidates have to appear for the IMU-CET exams. Rank-holding candidates must get sponsorship through any registered shipping company before registering for this course.
  • Panel interview: Shortlisted candidates get called for the admission procedure.
  • Medical examination: Selected candidates will undergo a medical screening to test their eyesight and physical fitness.
  • Pre-sea training: Candidates who clear the medical examination will begin with 1 year of pre-sea training.

Career Path

  • Pre-Sea Training
    Complete 1 year of your Pre-Sea training from a DG Shipping Approved institute.
  • Work as a Trainee
    Go through 18 months of training onboard a ship.
  • Obtain BSc degree
    Appear for 2nd mate exam and obtain BSc in Nautical Science degree.
  • Promotion to 2nd Officer
    Join a ship as the 3rd officer and then get promoted to 2nd officer after gaining required experience.
  • Promotion to Chief Officer
    After serving as the 2nd officer for a considerable period, get promoted to Chief officer.
  • Become the Captain
    After serving as the Chief officer for a considerable period, get promoted to the Captain of the Ship.
