Philippines Maritime Sanctuary At Danger Due To Oil Leak From Sunken Cargo Vessel

According to reports, the maritime corridor of Isla Verde, a well-liked marine sanctuary, has been affected by the industrial oil leak from the drowning of a cargo vessel in February 2023. This environmental disaster could be caused by the marine corridor. Around 533 hectares of mangroves were reported to have been damaged by the leak in Pola, Oriental Mindoro, by the university. Oil has been spotted in the marine corridor and on beaches.

The government of the Philippines is getting assistance from its Japanese counterpart to control the spill that is still coming from the cargo ship that sank at a depth of 400 metres without the authorities being able to completely block the escape path for the oil. Up to a year is possibly needed to clean up the spill, and for six months, fisherman from villages near the spill may not be able to fish in the nearby waters.

The Lough Derg RNLI rescued 40 people on a 40-foot passenger ship that had grounded on a rocky shoal off the coast of County Galway’s Bonaveen Point. The lifeboat questioned the casualty vessel and Valentia Coast Guard if it had been taking on water and if there were any risks in the water nearby while in VHF contact with them. Read More

The Portuguese Navy reports that at around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) received a distress call about a fire aboard the Malta-flagged tanker Greta K, which was about 1.5 miles off the coast, about 3 kilometers from Ingleses Beach in Foz do Douro, Portugal.
