Oil Leak From Vessel Off Gibraltar Impacts Fishing And Beaches

Teams are striving to mitigate the impacts of a new oil leakage from a cargo vessel that is partly sunken in Gibraltar that has reportedly affected bathing and fishing in the British territory and a town located close by in Spain, officials mentioned on Wednesday.

The Gibraltar Port authority added the poor weather over the weekend had triggered the leak. The authority said that better weather on Tuesday permitted the placement of a boom around the vessel to contain the spill.

Two beaches based in Gibraltar and one in Spain’s f La Linnea de La Concepción were closed and workers were unable to clean them of oil wastes. The ship ran into a collision with another vessel on 29 August.

The town hall located in La Línea has reported that fishing in the surrounding areas has reportedly been suspended after the collision.

The ship was broken in two. It is now resting on the seabed in the shallow waters, the relevant authorities based in Gibraltar stated.

Gibraltar Port further added that the latest oil spill involved oil onboard that may not be gotten rid of with pumps. Salvage teams are yet to decide on the most appropriate way to get rid of the shipwreck from the area.
